Bridge Street Swindon

We may not have a time machine like Dr Who that allows us to visit a point in time but the image can give such an amount of information its almost like being there.

I found this image the other day that I had forgotten about. I expect that I saw it on Ebay and bought it and never put into my collection. Its only small 2.5 by 3.5 inches but the resolution is really good so that after scanning it enlarged very well.

It is such a simple scene, a busy shopping day with a selection of people going about their business.

On the extreme left of the image are two ladies chatting, slightly to the right are two gents one with a flat cap, possibly a uniform and given the main employer of the town he could be a railwayman.

The two chaps closer to the camera; one is a working man the other most likely middle class judging by the quality of the jackets, caps and trousers.

The Oxford Hotel looks closed as the main doors are closed and there are three gentlemen chatting at the kerb edge.

On the right had side the most prominent people are the shopkeeper and the lady in the foreground, head down busy getting home with the shopping.

On the left are two women, possibly mother and teenage daughter with outfits that almost match.

There is a lady or teenage girl in a light outfit with a smaller child next to her and a pushchair with a younger still child. Next to them is a ladder. This could be a window cleaners ladder or possibly the shops ladder that helps them hang their products outside what looks like the doorway to the shop

The only person in the whole photograph that has noticed the photographer is the lady with the bicycle on the extreme right.
